Roundtable on Living Wages: Strengthening Collective Bargaining – Enabling Living Wages

Berlin
Living wages are key to combating poverty and forced labor worldwide and promoting sustainable, fair supply chains. While more and more laws in Germany and Europe are setting clear guidelines, practice shows that minimum wages or existing collective bargaining agreements often fall far short of a living wage.

The third roundtable of the UN Global Compact Network Germany is dedicated to the question of how collective bargaining can contribute to the implementation of living wages. Although minimum wages or comparable regulations exist in over 170 countries, these are often significantly below the level of a living wage. In order to secure fair wages in the long term, strong, equal relationships between employers and employee representatives as well as supportive framework conditions are needed.

In dialogue with representatives from business, trade unions, politics, and civil society, practical approaches and challenges will be discussed that go beyond voluntary individual measures and can structurally anchor living wages. We expect input from representatives of the ILO, two Turkish trade unions, the INKOTA network, the Bangladesh Labor Foundation, and a company that will report on its practical experience.

The target group is companies that already have experience with living wages and/or cooperation with employee representatives, as well as non-business experts who deal with the implementation and safeguarding of living wages in their work.
